Three Measurements to Take Before Buying Car Accessories

Footprint, attachment points, and clearance: three quick checks that tell you whether an organizer, seat cover, sunshade, or cargo liner will actually fit your vehicle.

Measuring the cargo floor of an SUV with a tape measure

"Universal fit" is a useful starting point, but vehicles differ in ways a label can't capture: seat shapes, headrest posts, the gap between the wheel wells, and where the airbags are. Ten minutes with a tape measure can save you a return. Here are the three checks we recommend before buying any cabin or cargo accessory.

1. The footprint

Measure the space the accessory will occupy, with seats and storage set the way you actually use them.

  • Organizers: length, width, and height of the space, plus room to lift things out and to open the console lid or glove box.
  • Seat covers: seat width across the cushion, depth from the front edge to the seatback, and seatback height. Note split-folding sections, center armrests, and seat-mounted controls.
  • Sunshades: height and width of the windshield glass, plus the size and position of the rearview mirror mount and any sensor housing behind it.
  • Cargo liners and trunk organizers: floor length, the narrowest width between the wheel wells, and the size of the trunk or liftgate opening.

2. The attachment points

An accessory that looks right can still rely on attachments your vehicle doesn't have. Before you order, check the product's installation method against your vehicle:

  • Headrests: whether they adjust or come out, and the spacing of the posts. Many organizers, seat covers, and pet barriers strap around them.
  • Seat anchors: whether you can tuck anchors into the crease between the seat cushion and the seatback.
  • Cargo hooks and tie-downs: how many your cargo area has and where they are.
  • Vents and dash: the vent blade style for vent mounts, and the dash surface texture for adhesive mounts.
  • Power: where your 12V sockets and USB ports are, and which connector types they use.

Read the product page and installation details rather than guessing the mount from a photo. If the attachment method isn't clear, ask us before you buy.

3. The clearance

Once you know it fits, make sure it stays out of the way. Sit in the driver's seat and go through your normal routine:

  • Seat belts latch and retract normally, and buckles stay easy to reach.
  • Seat covers leave side airbags in the seat bolsters uncovered, unless the cover is labeled compatible with seat-mounted airbags.
  • Floor mats lie flat and lock to the retention hooks, with nothing under the pedals.
  • Mirrors, windows, and your view of the road stay clear.
  • Doors, the liftgate, folding seats, and the spare tire compartment still open fully.

Keep a measurement note

Save your vehicle's year, make, model, and trim with your measurements in a note on your phone, along with a photo of the headrests and cargo hooks. The next time you shop, you can compare product dimensions in seconds. Our Fit Guide lists what to measure for sedans, SUVs, pickups, minivans, and EVs.
